Raising awareness, building bridges
A Surrey-based society is working to create awareness around mental health in the South Asian community with a multilingual conference Oct. 22 at Queen Elizabeth Secondary School.
In a release, the South Asian Mental Health Action and Awareness (SAMHAA) Society says its goal is to fight the stigma often related to people who have mental health issues and help build connections in the community.
The South Asian Mental Health Community Conference is the society’s first and will include keynote speakers on topics such as depression, substance abuse, ADHD, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder and dementia.
Those who attend will also have the chance to interact with mental health professionals one-on-one and get information in English, Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu.
The event will be hosted in partnership with the BC Mental Health Foundation, Surrey School District and Sources Community Resource Centre Society.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. To register or for more information, visit www.samhaa.org
