Volunteers sought for planting day
Friends of the Semiahmoo Heritage Trail are asking for help planting 400 trees and other native vegetation on Saturday.
The planting and restoration event will begin at 10 a.m., Nov. 5. Volunteers can meet at 2570 149 St. (to access 149 Street, turn north off 24 Avenue at 150 Street or turn east off 148 Street at 26 Avenue).
The trail has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s, according to Ellen Neal, stewardship co-ordinator for the society.
Originally built over a 40-kilometre stretch from Blaine to Browns Landing, across from New Westminster, the trail was used to expedite trade between the United States and Canada.
The trail has seen many changes, such as the ever-growing development in the area, but in 2003 bylaws were set to protect the remaining few kilometres left, Neal said.
Shovels and gloves will be provided for the event and refreshments will be available after.
