Middelaer presented with Diamond Jubilee Medal

A principal of Southridge School is among 41 British Columbians who were presented the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal last week, in an afternoon ceremony in Vancouver.

Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon presented the award to Laurel Middelaer on Jan. 23 at the Beatty Street Armoury.

Other recipients represented cadets, veterans, the Vancouver Police Department and the fields of community service, volunteerism, culture and the arts.

The commemorative medal was created to mark the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne as queen of Canada, and aims to honour “significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.”

A total of 60,000 Canadians are to be recognized.

Middelaer, who leads Southridge’s junior school and has advocated for tougher impaired-driving laws since the 2008 death of her daughter, Alexa, learned of her award in November.
