A White Rock minister was recognized by city officials last week for her work in areas including social justice issues.

Rev. Joan McMurtry of the First United Church was presented with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal at the start of the Feb. 4 council meeting, held at the White Rock Community Centre.

The medal "acknowledges Reverend McMurtry’s involvement with social justice, local service groups and participation in coalitions on international and local issues as well as crisis," a statement in the evening's agenda notes.

"Under Reverend McMurtry’s leadership, the First United Church in White Rock has overseen programs regarding food services, cold weather accommodation and annual Christmas dinners."

The medals celebrate the jubilee by honouring Canadian citizens and permanent residents who have made a significant contribution to their community and the country over the last 60 years.

Across Canada, 60,000 of the medals are being awarded.

Other recent recipients on the Semiahmoo Peninsula include historian Lorraine Ellenwood and Southridge Junior School principal Laurel Middelaer.
