More local jubilee medal recipients
The Peninsula can add three more names to the list of people honoured with a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.
South Surrey White Rock NDP MLA candidate Susan Keeping has received a medal recognizing her advocacy work, which includes 20 years as co-founder and executive director of Newton Advocacy Group Society.
Keeping, who is also the founder and director of Vibrant Surrey, received a YWCA Women of Distinction award in 2008.
White Rock resident Edie Ehler was one of 26 Rick Hansen Foundation Difference Makers awarded a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal for her 19 years’ work through the foundation “creating awareness of potential for those with disabilities.”
And White Rock Mayor Wayne Baldwin was nominated for the distinction by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
The medal also recognizes the role municipalities – and their elected leaders – play in ensuring prosperity and a high quality of life, a city news release states.
“Your peers in local government across the country admire your accomplishments as a community leader, and congratulate you on earning this prestigious award,” a letter to Baldwin from the FCM reads.
The medals are being presented to 60,000 Canadians, in honour of the Queen’s 60 years service to Canada.
Baldwin – who presented one of the medals to Rev. Joan McMurtry on Feb. 4 – described receiving the award as “an honour.”
“White Rock is a spectacular place to live, with a strong sense of community,” he said. “It has been a pleasure to dedicate such a large part of my life to this wonderful place.”
