The late Ryan Ashe called the streets of uptown White Rock home for more than two decades, and many who came to know him didn't hesitate to keep an eye on the scruffy yet affable man.

Sept. 27, those wanting to bid a proper farewell to Ashe are invited to a memorial service at the White Rock Community Centre.

"There's so many people that did know him," Orphee Martin, Ashe's sister, said Tuesday. "He was really lucky to have the people in White Rock."

Ashe, 56, died Aug. 13 after being admitted to Peace Arch Hospital less than a week prior. Authorities removed him from the streets last fall, and it was after that that it was discovered Ashe had cancer, Martin said.

Martin said many people have been asking about a memorial, and expects there will be quite a crowd for the 5-7 p.m. event at the 15154 Russell Ave. centre.

Anyone wishing to share a memory or photo of Ashe is invited to email the tribute to Martin at orphee5@me.com
