White Rock man collecting school supplies for isolated village
A White Rock man is collecting school supplies for an isolated village in the North West Territories.
Clifford Grant will send the items to Tuktoyaktuk – which has a population of 1,000 and is only accessible by ice road in the winter and airplane in the summer and early fall – for the 200 students who are experiencing a shortage of supplies due to the limited means of transportation to the community.
“Having lived in an isolated community of 27 years, I am aware of what it is like to not be able to obtain supplies. The isolation in Tuktoyaktuk is more severe than any of my experiences, though,” he said.
Items needed include flash cards (especially math and spelling), note pads, post-it notes, pencils, binders and more.
The deadline for the donations is March 29 as access via the ice road ends at the end of April.
Grant added that the Rotary Club would also bring in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program to Tuktoyaktuk preschoolers later this month.
