Two budding fashion designers will be showcasing their collections at the Kwantlen Polytechnic University annual fashion show next week.

Kaylyn MacKenzie and Kylee Gill – both fourth-year fashion, design and technology students – will present their designs April 24 as part of their final project.

Gill, a White Rock resident, designed her line, Trinity Apparel, with volunteers in mind.

The Elgin Park Secondary School graduate tailored her designs for girls aged eight to 12 who actively volunteer.

“I’ve always wanted to create something that connects fashion and everyday life,” Gill said in a news release. “I know what it feels like to be a plus-sized preteen with few style options. Trinity Apparel is inspired by and for young girls who are focused on giving back to their communities.”

Ten per cent of sales from Gill’s line will be donated to One More Generation, the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup and the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society.

MacKenzie’s collection, YOU, designed for women in wheelchairs will be modelled in the three back-to-back shows by Minister of Children and Family Development Stephanie Cadieux (MLA for Surrey-Cloverdale) and friends Kirsten Sharp, a peer program co-ordinator for Spinal Cord Injury B.C., and Teri Thorson, a Rick Hansen Foundation Ambassador.

“With so few options for clothing that are up-to-date for those with disability, I decided to make my niche market female wheelchair users,” MacKenzie said in the release.

The two women will be among 37 designers who will present at the fashion show, to be held at the River Rock Casino and Show Theatre in Richmond.

Tickets are $18. For more information, visit www.kpu.ca/theshow2014
