Surrey’s Paul Rodgers shares stage with Led Zep, AC/DC singers in England (video)

Three famous vocalists do a version of ‘Money (That’s What I Want)’ in Oxford

Singer Paul Rodgers was joined by some big-name company on a concert stage in England last weekend.

The Free/Bad Company vocalist – who lives in South Surrey, at least part-time – was joined by Brian Johnson, of AC/DC fame, and Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant for a cover of Barrett Strong’s song “Money (That’s What I Want),” during Rodgers’ sold-out “Free Spirit” concert in Oxford on Sunday (May 14).

“They totally made (the song) their own,” reported Rodgers’ publicity firm, PRO International, in an email.

Fans captured the moment in several videos since posted to Youtube.

“Plant walked on, harmonica and mic in hand, followed by Brian Johnson with a tambourine and mic in hand. The crowd couldn’t quite believe their eyes. This is the first time that Johnson has performed in the past year due to (severe) ear issues.”

Rodgers and Plant are longtime friends going back to the days when Bad Company and Led Zeppelin were both signed to the Swan Song/Atlantic record labels, in the mid-1970s.

“Johnson and Rodgers have met a couple of times through the years and both hail from the North Country in England – Rodgers from Middlesborough and Johnson from Newcastle,” noted PRO.

Rodgers’ current tour of the U.K. concludes with a concert at London’s famous Royal Albert Hall on May 28.

In Surrey in October 2011, Rodgers became a Canadian citizen during a ceremony held at the Central City tower. He led others in a rendition of “O Canada” that day. More than 100 new citizens from 30 different countries took part in the annual Canadian Citizenship Week ceremony.
