Food stars to be honoured
An effort to celebrate those working to preserve farmland and ensure food security in B.C. has launched.
White Rock resident Donna Passmore, a campaign director with the Farmland Defence League of B.C., announced the first Stars of Food Security Awards will be presented Sept. 15, at a wine-and-cheese reception at the Fort Langley Heritage Hall.
The awards are to be given every three years, prior to municipal elections.
Nominations, due by Aug. 15, are open in 11 categories: policy development, food security education, education through journalism, governance, corporate advocate, farmgate advocate, citizen advocate, political advocate, public servant advocate, whistleblower and lifetime achievement.
In announcing the awards, Passmore said regions around the world have experienced climate change-induced agricultural collapse and increases in food prices of 15 to 60 per cent. Ninety-three per cent of people believe B.C.’s foodlands must be protected, she states.
