ALEX HOUSE: A Business Excellence finalist

Alex House has been selected as one of three finalists for the 2012 Surrey Board of Trade Business Excellence Awards in the not-for-profit, budget over $500,000 category.

No one knows who the winners are until the awards are presented at a gala awards dinner Nov. 15 at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford hotel.

Tickets are available through the Surrey Board of Trade at 604-581-7130 or www.businessinsurrey.com

Families are at the heart of Alex House.

While we continue to welcome new families with infants and toddlers into our programs through Alexandra Family Place, we are also engaging families through our Alexandra Children’s Centres at Kensington Prairie in Morgan Crossing and both the Beach House and Joyce Mason Hall in Crescent Beach.

All three locations offer licensed childcare based on the Reggio Emilia approach to learning.

For more on childcare call 604-535-0015, ext. 233.

Alex House also operates two out-of-school care programs for children ages five to 12.

Our after-school club runs in White Rock from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Call 604-535-0015, ext. 229.

School-age care programs are provided both before and after school at Kensington Prairie Community Centre and Alexandra Neighbourhood House in Crescent Beach.

For information and registration, call 604-535-0015, ext. 233.

Both programs provide lots of varied activities, homework support, social and life skills.

The adjustment to being a parent is a significant life change, filled with both joys and challenges which change as babies turn to toddlers, turn to children, turn to teens.

Several parenting programs will be starting soon at Alex House to help you with the parenthood journey.

Listening is one of the most important tools parents can use, and in the  ‘Listen To Me Workshop’ you will learn how to communicate with your child or teen.

Mommy and Me is a group for moms with babies under a year that provides connecting time with other moms, community resources, information and support. We also teach songs, rhymes and bounces you can do with your baby.

For information on all three programs, contact Shelley at 604-538-5060 ext 24 or email scranstone@alexhouse.net

Thanksgiving is behind us and what a happy occasion it was, with a roomful of  people enjoying our traditional community turkey feast.

Once again, we extend a huge “thank you’ to The Turkey House and Deli, who have supplied all the fresh turkey for this event for more than 20 years. Without their support, we simply would not be able to provide this very popular – and tasty – community dinner.

Thanks also to all the volunteers who donated their time and talents.

As always, we couldn’t do it without you.

Donni Klassen is program and communications director at Alexandra Neighbourhood House. For information on programs/services at Camp Alexandra, call 604-535-0015 or go to www.alexhouse.net
