ACTIVE ADULTS: Lots of great activities ahead

February, the ‘Heart’ month, was filled with healthy-heart activities for all ages at the South Surrey Recreation Centre.  Our first ‘Healthy Hearts Family Day’ was celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 9 with great success. Families worked as a team participating in an obstacle course, pickle ball, Zumba, yoga and hip hop. It was lots of active fun for all ages promoting the City of Surrey’s I am Game approach to life-long enjoyment of sport.

Valentine’s Day was packed with ‘heart’ starting with our AED (Automated External Defibulator) free information session for the public, where 25 adults learned the particulars of operating the public-access AEDs that are located within our centre. This was followed by our Coffee and Connect tour luncheon (in partnership with Sources) that included a musical performance by one of our senior services members. The day ended with the Valentine’s Day Pickle Ball scramble tournament and tea that hosted approximately 30 players.

A huge thank you is sent out to our volunteers who make all of these events a great success. February was definitely a happy month filled with fitness, friendship and wellness.

March will bring the beginning of exciting changes to our South Surrey Recreation Centre with the start of construction on our beautiful new expansion. Features of the fitness and art space expansion will include an 8,000-square-foot weight room, a fitness studio, a spin studio, a multi-purpose arts room, visual arts and pottery studios, an expanded lobby and a new exterior plaza.

Construction will start around the beginning of March and, by mid- to late- March, there will be changes to the location of our main entrance and office area. We will have hand-out information sheets available to the public so please pick one up when you are visiting the centre.

We appreciate your patience during the upcoming construction period. Any questions, please contact us at 604-592-6970.

Our Enjoy Bus trip to the Brian Minter Garden and Country Store still has space for Monday, March 25. This tour includes a private meet-and-greet with Brian Minter, admission to the gardens, lunch at the Envision Conservatory Garden Café and time to shop at the Country Store. It’s a full day for our garden lovers, leaving South Surrey at 8:30 a.m. and returning at 6 p.m. Contact the centre to sign up with registration #4311825.
