SENIORS' SCENE: Games in the cards at Kent Street

Kent Street Activity Centre invites all adults 55-plus who enjoy cribbage and bid whist to play every Thursday, 1-3:15 p.m., in the auditorium.

Newcomers are welcome to a three-visit guest pass before purchasing a White Rock Recreation and Culture membership.

Feeling lucky? Bring a partner and play in the cribbage tournaments the fourth Friday of each month, 12:45-3:30 p.m., and win prizes. Call 604-541-2231.

• The Kent Street Senior Society will host a book-and-bake-sale fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 11, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Kent Street auditorium.

If you have any gently used books you would like to donate, please drop them off at the centre before Feb. 3. All proceeds go to support the Kent Street Activity Centre’s projects and programs for seniors in the community.

• Learn how to use a basic pattern to make a garment of your choice.

Whether you have never sewed before or need a refresher, this garment-sewing class – beginning Thursday, Jan. 26 for five weeks – might be just what you are looking for.

Included in the course is pattern layout, how to make adjustments for fit, darts, zippers, finishing and linings.

• Do you love singing and listening to music? How about socializing and discussing a variety of musical genres and styles?

The Joy of Music program is a perfect class for music lovers and entertainment enjoyers alike.

Join instructor Christine Dibble in this fun, interactive and educational program, beginning Wednesday, Jan. 18, 11 a.m. to noon, at the Kent Street Activity Centre. Call 604-541-2199.

• Have you ever given thought to being able to eat from your garden every day of the year?

Learn basic gardening principles that will help you gain food self-sufficiency and grow more food on less land.

A series of four workshops will be offered over the next few months, beginning with Planning and Preparing your Garden for Success, Thursday, Jan. 12, 7-9 p.m, at the White Rock Community Centre.

Instructor Dan Oostenbrink is a market gardener at the Local Harvest Market in Chilliwack. He is passionate about organic growing and gives a practical approach to gardening that maximizes your garden’s productivity.

• Discover practical strategies to alleviate low mood and negative thoughts at “Feeling Better,” a six-session program at the Centre for Active Living beginning Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2:30-4:30 p.m.

Through a combination of cognitive skills, healing physical movements and guided visualizations, you will actively engage in more beneficial ways of thinking, feeling and behaving.

• Good Vibrations will be on stage Wednesday evening playing your favourite social dance tunes at the Kent Street auditorium.

Doors open at 7 p.m., with dancing 7:30-10:30 p.m. There are mixers to meet other dancers, so come on your own or bring a friend.
