White Rock’s Centennial Community Garden will double in size.
Growing by the Sea, a non-profit society that has spearheaded the expansion, received $21,590 total from the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation and the Surrey/White Rock Food Action Coalition to increase the size of the community garden.
“We thank the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation for recognizing the important role gardens play in enhancing the health and wellness of our community. Gardens provide opportunities to grow nutritious food, develop social connections, and nature beautiful green spaces,” Rick Ketcheson, vice-president of Growing by the Sea and co-chair of the food action coalition, said in a news release.
Growing by the Sea is welcoming new members to help with the planning of the new garden.
“Our waiting list for community garden space keeps growing,” said Garden volunteer co-ordinator Pat Christensen.
“This new space, adjacent to the existing community gardens, will help tremendously, but we will have to continue our efforts to create more garden space. We are always looking for potential garden sites.”
An afternoon open house to kick off the project is slated for June 11 from 2-4 p.m. near the Vine Street and Anderson Street intersection.
