Skateboarder struck in Grandview intersection

A 14-year-old skateboarder is recovering from soft-tissue injuries after he was struck in a South Surrey intersection Thursday morning.

Police say the teen was knocked off his skateboard by a black Acura as he rode across Croydon Drive eastbound on 24 Avenue.

Emergency crews, including paramedics, were called to the intersection after a passerby reported the incident around 10:20 a.m.

Shortly after 10:30 a.m., paramedics and firefighters could be seen attending to an injured person lying on the street. The victim was put on a stretcher and lifted into a waiting ambulance.

Investigation is ongoing, however, police say independent witness accounts indicate the teen may have been crossing against a red light. He was hit by the Acura as its driver – a 43-year-old Surrey resident – moved to turn left westbound onto 24th.

Eastbound traffic on 24 Avenue was temporarily slowed and re-routed south on Croydon while crews attended to the scene. Traffic in other directions was unaffected.

The victim was released from hospital later the same day. Charges are not anticipated.
