A report of a man walking at the side of the road with a shotgun sent police racing to the 4400-block of 184 Street this morning – to find a fully licensed hunter.

Officers investigating blocked off 184 Street just south of 56 Avenue around 8 a.m. in response to the weapons call. As well, several units were dispatched to the scene.

Motorists heading south on 184 Street reported a police vehicle blocking both lanes of traffic just south of the train tracks. As well, hundreds of metres south of the blockade, two vehicles could be seen pulled over on the west side of 184 Street.

Police say the concern was abated in short order. Locating the man along the Nicomekl River, they determined he was licensed to hunt in the area.

He had been reported walking south over the overpass and then west underneath it. Officers who responded advised the man – in the interest of avoiding public panic in the future – to park on the property itself and not at the side of the road.
