Woman's body found in South Surrey
Police are investigating after a woman's body was discovered near the Nicomekl River in South Surrey by a passerby Thursday.
Surrey RCMP confirmed officers with the detachment's major crimes unit were called to 15500-block of 40 Avenue around 4:30 p.m. July 19.
Sgt. Drew Grainger said the "horrendous discovery" was made by a man who was in the area scoping out fishing spots. He found the woman lying on a walking path adjacent to the river.
It's believed she had not been there long.
Grainger said police have no evidence that the woman – believed to be in her 20s – was a victim of foul play, but they are awaiting results of an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
"On the surface, we don't see any signs of foul play," he said.
The woman has been identified, but police are holding off on releasing her name publicly out of respect for the family, he added.
At the scene Friday, yellow police tape could be seen along a portion of river's shore; one officer was stationed immediately east of the bridge that runs over the river, at the foot of a pot-holed dirt road leading towards the area; and a dark-coloured SUV could be seen about 50 feet down the road.
Grainger said he is not aware of any vehicle associated to the incident.
Describing some of the circumstances as "unusual," Grainger said efforts to "put this puzzle together" are continuing. Anyone with information that could help fill in the blanks is asked to contact the detachment at 604-599-0502.
