Pedestrian struck by vehicle in South Surrey
An 80-year-old woman was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital Thursday afternoon with what police described as a "hand-crushing" injury, after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in South Surrey.
The incident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. near Southmere Crescent and Martin Drive.
According to police, the senior – a South Surrey resident – was hit as she crossed Martin Drive eastbound, by a Toyota Rav4 that was turning left out of the mall parking lot to head south on Martin.
The pedestrian was knocked into a semi-seated position by the impact. The vehicle ran over her left hand.
Firefighters and police blocked the intersection while emergency crews attended to the victim.
At the scene, police could be seen speaking with a seemingly distraught woman who was sitting in a Toyota SUV parked on Martin Drive just south of the intersection.
A 64-year-old White Rock woman was issued a $167 ticket under the Motor Vehicle Act for failing to yield.
