Traffic cop in car accident in North Surrey

pcmva.jpg

Police are trying to figure out the cause of an accent involving a road safety cop and a truck.

At about 1 p.m. a member of the Integrated Road Safety Unit collided with a truck at about 122 Street and 88 Avenue.

The officer was heading eastbound on 88 Avenue when the collision occurred. The direction of the truck wasn't determined by Tuesday afternoon, but it did veer off the road and smash into a lamp standard.

The officer was unharmed, but the driver of the other vehicle was taken to hospital with non-life threatening back injuries.

Police believe at this point the accident happened during the course of the officer's duties, but as of Tuesday afternoon were unable to say for sure.

Initially the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) was called out to investigate the conduct of the officer, but determined the accident wasn't serious enough to fall within their mandate, police say.

The investigation continues.
