Officer on trial for hit-and-run death
A White Rock RCMP constable who was criminally charged in connection with the May 2011 hit-and-run death of 56-year-old Marilyn Laursen will go to trial.
According to court records, the proceedings are set for four days in Surrey Provincial Court starting Feb. 11, 2014.
Charges of dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm were announced against the officer last August, following an investigation conducted by the Vancouver Police Department at the request of the RCMP.
That investigation was launched immediately following the collision that killed Laursen, who was crossing Johnston Road at Thrift Avenue with a friend when she was struck.
The driver of the car that hit her, Kyle Brandon Danyliuk, pleaded guilty to four charges in connection with Laursen’s death, and was sentenced last October to two years in jail.
The court heard during sentencing that Danyliuk struck Laursen in the course of trying to evade police.
Bickle is next due in court on Nov. 18 for a trial confirmation hearing.
