Peter Fassbender on B.C. teachers' strike, avoiding legislation (VIDEO)

After talks with the BC Teachers Federation broke off on Saturday – officially delaying the start of the 2014/15 school year past September 2 – the province's Education Minister Peter Fassbender called this a "critical time" and precedent for negotiations with public sector unions.

"We have found that legislation has led to litigation, has led to court cases," Fassbender said. "We have got to stop doing it that way, we have to find a way. And it's not easy, it's not comfortable, but we are not going to legislate.

"My hope is still, we can get a negotiated settlement."
