VIDEO: Man facing ‘serious charges’ after fleeing through South Surrey berry fields

RCMP say burned-out truck on scene was stolen from Maple Ridge

What started with a stolen pickup truck ended with a man arrested in a berry field after a wild Sunday night for Surrey RCMP.

The evening began at 6:30 p.m. when Surrey officers were called to the 3200 block of 176 Street, where they found a burned-out GMC Sierra pickup truck.

According to a RCMP release, “a male was observed pushing a wheelbarrow full of items away from the burning vehicle.”

Police quickly set up a perimeter in the area, and a police dog team began to track the suspect.

The truck was reportedly stolen from a residence in the Maple Ridge area last week. Police say the vehicle was associated with a number of break-and-enters where firearms had been taken.

Ridge Meadows RCMP said they could not confirm whether those robberies occurred in Maple Ridge.

Shortly after police found the truck, several calls came in to Surrey RCMP from residents along 176 Street, who reported the man was attempting to steal a vehicle and make his way into residences.

As police began to close in on him, the man reportedly stole a bicycle from one of the homes and attempted to ride it through the nearby berry fields in order to escape.

The police dog and its handler caught up with the man in the field, and after a brief altercation where the suspect reportedly bit the dog in the face, he was apprehended and arrested by officers.

“The dog is okay,” a spokesperson from Surrey RCMP confirmed, giving the majority of the credit for the arrest to the dog and its handler.

A 37-year-old Surrey man with no fixed address is currently in custody and was set to appear in court Monday.

It is not yet known what he is being charged with, but Surrey RCMP said the charges he’s facing are “numerous” and “serious.”

Ridge Meadows RCMP later said in a release that they are investigating possible links between this case and that of a man who was assaulted in Maple Ridge on Friday evening.

That happened in the 11000 block of 284 Street, where officers found a man in distress near a rural property.

The victim was taken to hospital where he remains in serious condition.

Ridge Meadows RCMP couldn’t say anything more, as both investigations are ongoing.
