Three White Rock mayoral hopefuls remain
White Rock voters won't know it from the ballot they'll be filling out Nov. 19, but the city's mayoral race is down to three: Larry Anschell, Wayne Baldwin and Lynne Sinclair.
A fourth candidate, Angelo Megla, told Peace Arch News Friday that he is no longer in the running due to family matters.
"I will be dropping out of the race," Megla confirms in a Nov. 4 email. "Recent family events are preventing me from pursuing the mayoral seat."
But the news comes too late to remove Megla's name from the ballot, confirmed Tracey Arthur, the city's chief election officer.
Arthur, who had not received Megla's notice of withdrawal as of 1:30 p.m. Friday, said the last opportunity to withdraw from the race was 4 p.m. Oct. 21.
"The ballots have been printed and it's business as usual," Arthur said. "He's on the ballot."
Megla, who moved to White Rock about three months ago, filed nomination papers for the mayors race on Oct. 14. His wife told PAN Thursday that things took a turn earlier this week when Megla's mother was injured in a fall and he had to go out of town to care for her.
Megla's name is second among four mayoral candidates listed on the ballot.
