Man charged after woman, baby threatened while riding Vancouver bus

The 56-year-old is alleged to have prevented the woman from leaving the bus and lunging at her

A 56-year-old man was set to appear in court on Tuesday after a woman was threatened and harassed while riding the bus.

The woman, who was travelling with her baby, got on the bus at Davie and Bute streets in Vancouver’s West End on May 31. A man later got on as well, and stood beside her stroller.

He began focusing on the baby, leaning over it and allegedly pushing repeatedly on the release buttons of the harness,” Transit Police said in a statement released Tuesday. “When the mother asked him to stop, he allegedly became verbally abusive, yelling and swearing at her.”

When another passenger tried to intervene, the man allegedly challenged him to a fight and said he would break his nose.

The mother then tried to get off the bus, but the man allegedly blocked her way and lunged at her and the baby.

Other passengers held him back until he escaped at Davie and Granville. He remained outside the bus, yelling.

Transit police say they tracked him down and arrested him 10 days later at Main and Hastings.

Arthur Emile Cherpak, of no fixed addressed, is accused of uttering threats, assault and criminal harassment. He is well known to police.
