McCALLUM Cyril (Mac), born February 13, 1920, passed away peacefully with his family on June 21, 2009 at Morgan Place Care Facility in Surrey, BC. Cyril was welcomed into the loving arms of his wife, Norah, who predeceased him in June 2006 and his daughter Clare, in April 2008. Cyril is survived by sons Jim (Karyn) and Hugh, daughter Rhona (Ron), grandchildren David, Andrew, Craig, Stephen, Bryan, John, Gordon, Stuart, Grace and Natalie, six great-grandchildren, nephews Colin and Jim and nieces Bonnie and Pam. Norah's nephew Paul and cousins Peggie, Peter and Katharine will miss him dearly.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Cyril's family immigrated to Michigan in the 1920s, only to be repatriated to Glasgow in the 1930s. Cyril enlisted in the British Army Royal Ordinance Corps in 1939 and served in Egypt, Greece and Italy, where in 1944 he met Norah, also of Glasgow and a British Services ATS Corporal. They married on February 13, 1945 in Naples. They set up home in Glasgow post-war until 1957 when they immigrated to Montreal, Que. In 1984, Norah and Cyril retired to White Rock, BC, near extended family.

After Aberdeen University in 1947, Cyril became a Phys. Ed teacher for most of his teaching career until retirement in 1981 from Dorval HS. Cyril obtained his M.Sc.Ed. at NYSU in 1970 and his BA in History at Concordia in 1978.

Cyril was an accomplished boxer in his teens and in wartime he was the Middle East British Forces welterweight champion. Cyril coached the Glasgow University boxing team to the 1954 World Student Games in Budapest. Cyril loved the water, teaching swimming and lifesaving in Montreal pools. Cyril's other love was music, teaching Scottish dance, playing piano for family and friends, selling pianos part-time at Eaton's and enjoying his record collection.

Cyril had an encyclopedic memory. He was a story-teller, a charmer and a gentleman. He loved to discuss music, films, books and history. He worked hard and was devoted to his family. He will now be with his darling Norah and they will dance together on the first day of summer forever.

Friends are invited to celebrate Cyril's life with his family at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 4 at Morgan Creek Golf Course, 3500 Morgan Creek Way, Surrey. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund, or any Veterans' organization, are appreciated.
