Horace Charles (Smitty) Smith

Passed away peacefully on Tuesday May 27, 2003 at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock, B.C. Smitty was born December 22, 1919 in Koostatak, Manitoba and grew up in Sturgeon Creek, a suburb of Winnipeg. During the War, he served with the RCAF in the Maintenance and Recovery Section in Manitoba and British Columbia. After the War, his career in the heavy construction equipment industry began with Powell Equipment in Winnipeg and Brandon. He started a successful road building construction company in 1959, which he sold in 1966 and then moved to Ocean Park, B.C. to retire. Retirement did not suit him for long and he joined Pardee Equipment and then in 1970, with a partner, started Coast Tractor & Equipment Ltd. He retired again in 1978 after selling the company. He was well known and made many friends in his business career, his volunteer activities, the Royal Canadian Legion and through his passion for golf, which he played avidly until the week before he passed away. Smitty is survived by his wife of 60 years, Myrt and 3 children, Darlene Haggman, Robert (Patti) Smith and Kent (Heather) Smith, 4 grandchildren; Robert (Renee) Haggman, Gregg Haggman, Sean (Hillory) Smith, Crystal (Wayne) Wilborn and 3 great granddaughters; Taylor, Darian & Kaia. He is predeceased by 2 sisters, Dorothy Boyd & Myrtle Bolstad and brother Bernard (Bun) Smith. Smitty was much loved by all his family and friends and will be very sadly missed.
