Katie Dempcy (K.D.) Hickman was born May 23, 1907, at Farm Rangerton, Cape Province, South Africa, and died December 27, 2005, White Rock, Canada. Burial will be on Wednesday, January 4, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at Victory Memorial Park, 2977 King George Highway, Surrey; a memorial service will be at 3:00 p.m. at White Rock Baptist Church, 1657 140th Street, Surrey, BC.

Reception will follow in the church.

Dempcy will be remembered for her contributions as the second woman attorney in South Africa, and her commitment to eradicate apartheid at a time when that was a minority voice. She was highly intelligent, well-read, and a renowned wordsmith.

K.D. was greatly beloved by her daughter, Dr. M.G.R. Hickman-Barr, and partner Dr. S. Hacking, and will be sorely missed by all who knew her, including niece Beryl, cousin Kate, Sissy Rosie, Avril, Miriam, grandson Mick, daughter Judy, Chris, and Val. Her capacity to make new friends in a new country was legend as was her ability to live in the present.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband and piano duet partner, Basil Hickman.
