Editor:

To the man who told me to “show some respect” during the Nov. 11 Remembrance Day service at the White Rock cenotaph – as a mother of two young children I’m no longer able to stand in silence and reflect in gratitude on those who sacrificed their lives for my freedom.

Your request that I leave my children at home next time saddens me, because I now have the duty to pass the value of this day on to our future generation, with the hopes that such atrocities never be repeated.

While noise and excitement from young children might be against the sombre tone that you adopt to pay your respects, this is not the same for everyone.

I ask that you respect me and other parents, as we do our best to follow the words of Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae (In Flanders Fields):

To you, from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

Lest we forget.
