As a resident, taxpayer and voter in Surrey, I am very concerned about the upcoming Surrey municipal election. Once again, it appears that someone is determined to split the votes amongst the candidates running for mayor.

Surrey Police Service versus the RCMP has been a contentious issue since Doug McCallum took office in 2018. The residents of Surrey have never had a chance nor been allowed to vote on the issue.

Holding a referendum after the election in October would be very expensive, pointless and a long drawn-out process.

I believe we should vote on this issue in the Oct. 15 election. The choice between SPS and RCMP should be a plebiscite on the ballot when we vote for a mayor, councillors and school trustees. The vote would be cut-and-dried ‘yes’ or ‘no.’
