LETTERS: Trashing city’s reputation

Editor: We have even put up a sign, which seemed to help the situation. Or so we thought.

Editor:

On our daily dog walks through our neighbourhood, we frequently pass by Sunnyside Elementary at 159 Street and 28 Avenue.

At the front of the school is a Big Brothers donation box that is frequently filled by generous donors. Lately, however, the area has become an eyesore, thanks to thoughtless people throwing bags of garbage beside the box and onto the school grounds.

We have found shellfish shells, plastic yogurt containers, lots of small plastic garbage, meat and bones and some used hygiene products that I won’t detail.

My wife and I frequently clean up the mess and we have even put up a sign in four languages that reads “No Garbage No Dumping!” which seemed to help the situation. Or so we thought.

On Aug. 23, as we passed by the area, we saw the worst mess left so far. Watermelon and other fruit rinds and pieces of empty plastic food products. This latest mess has a lot of product labels are similar to ones we have seen and cleaned up before. In the midst of this disgusting garbage pile was a luggage tag from WestJet, flight WS 717, Toronto Pearson Airport to YVR Vancouver, dated Aug. 22.

If anyone has knowledge of these people and/or where they live, I would be very pleased to return this luggage tag to them and, as a bonus, I will also bag the garbage and instruct them where it should be disposed of, properly.

This is just another example of why our beautiful ‘City of Parks’ gets a bad reputation. Litter is 100 per cent preventable. Please, do your part and respect our public property and all places where people, especially children gather and play.
