Transit costs keep adding up
Not long ago, TransLink cancelled the direct bus link from White Rock and South Surrey to Vancouver.
The alternative is the bus to Bridgeport in Richmond and change to the Canada Line.
Now, we are told that because of the changeover, this route will cost double, as passengers will be required to purchase another ticket to board SkyTrain! Darn, I was going to use their “honour system.” But it seems the new fare gates are close to being operational – the same gates that should have been there in the first place.
As TransLink tries to operate a transit system, the City of Surrey tries to plan one. They appear to be leaning towards an LRT system running down the centre of an already congested King George Boulevard to Newton.
This plan would entail White Rock and South Surrey residents who travel on the SkyTrain Expo Line to take the bus to the Newton Exchange, then transfer to LRT for transit to Surrey Central and the final change over to SkyTrain. That’s two changes – probably three future “mode of transport” tickets – and you are still in Surrey!
If both organizations stopped listening to special-interest pressure groups and ceased spending taxpayer money on more study sessions, the money saved could help pay for an extension of the SkyTrain Expo Line from King George Station to the border.
