Re: Vary the viewpoints, Nov. 15 letters.

Your Nov. 15 issue had letters bashing Tom Fletcher and his BC Views opinion column.

The letter writers feel that Fletcher is pro-business and that he constantly attacks the left with a let-them-bleed attitude. They are sick of his views and would like a gentler rebuttal to his views.

To me, that is the editorial letters page, where, if I don’t agree with Fletcher, it is my democratic right to print my view in the local paper via the editorial department of the Peace Arch News.

Fletcher is an employee of Black Press that owns Peace Arch News, and he presumably submits his views through their legal department then it gets printed in various local B.C. papers owned by Black Press. He is edited for clarity, brevity, legality and taste.

He does have a point. He doesn’t like waste of taxpayers’ money, questions government policy and believes in a free-market system.

I also hate waste of taxpayers’ money, I sign petitions and write letters on government policy – provincially and federally – and I believe in a free market to a certain extent.

I believe that an item should only cost what it costs to manufacture plus a reasonable profit for the producer to encourage entrepreneurship.

I would love to see policies that upgraded our infrastructure provincewide, provide better transport across the province so that access to jobs can be possible, provide for the needy so that cashiers at Safeway don’t have to say “would you like to donate to the food bank” and, most of all, look to the long-term of the future, not just five years down the road to the next election.
