With six games to go in the BC Hockey Major Midget League season, the Valley West Hawks are destined for a mid-pack finish in the 11-team group.

The Hawks took three of four points from the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds last weekend, and are in fifth place with a 15-12-7 (won-lost-tied) record. Although just two points up on the Vancouver Canadians, they are nine ahead of the seventh-place South Island Royals and seven behind the fourth-place Vancouver Chiefs with four weeks remaining in the season.

The Hawks used a five-goal third period to top Fraser Valley 8-3 Saturday in Chilliwack.

Eric Callegari of Langley tallied twice for the Hawks, while Surrey forwards Spencer Unger and Rhett Wilcox each scored once and assisted on two others. Jakob Stukel of Cloverdale, Langley’s Josh Pollock, Jake Fletcher of Surrey and Kamloops native Addison Bazian were the other goal scorers.

The Hawks led 1-0 and 3-1 at the period breaks.

Valley West trailed 1-0 after one period Sunday in Langley, took a 3-2 lead into the third period, then had to get a game-tying goal from Wilcox with five minutes to play to earn a 4-4 tie.

Stukel scored twice and Cloverdale defenceman Cole Bevan notched a single in the second period to erase a one-goal Fraser Valley lead and put the Hawks up 3-1. The Thunderbirds scored in the last minute of the second period, and twice in the third for a 4-3 advantage. All four Fraser Valley goals came on the power play.

The Hawks will have a bye from league play next weekend, and will play next on the weekend of Feb. 16-17 when they play twice against the Vancouver Chiefs.
