Hawks clinch a third-place finish
The Valley West Hawks are enjoying their best season ever.
The BC Hockey Major Midget League team, comprised of elite 15-17 year-olds from the Surrey, Semiahmoo, Cloverdale and Langley minor hockey associations, clinched a third-place finish Saturday with a 3-1 victory over the fourth-place Vancouver Chiefs. On Sunday, they won their 25th game of the season by ripping the Chiefs 9-3.
Valley West has now matched their best-ever finish and win total. They can't climb any higher in the standings, but with two games remaining can set a new mark for most victories in a season by a Hawks team.
Valley West did all their scoring Saturday in the first half of the game, with Davis Koch scoring once while shorthanded and assisted on the other two Hawks goals.
Ty Westgard of White Rock and Matt Bradley of Surrey were the other goal scorers.
While the Hawks had nothing to play for Sunday, the Chiefs were still trying to nail down fourth place and home ice advantage for the playoffs. But it was Valley West dominating play from the start.
Bradley scored the game's first and last goals, and also added a pair of assists. He now leads the MML in goal scoring, with 35 in as many games played.
Defenceman Jamieson Reid of Surrey also scored twice, with singles coming from Westgard, Cloverdale's Jordan Funk, and Langley forwards Eric Callegari, Luke Gingras and Spencer Gerth.
After a bye next weekend, the Hawks will visit the North Island Silvertips for two games in Nanaimo March 1-2.
