A spring-league bantam hockey team made up predominantly of South Surrey players is hosting fundraiser this weekend to help them finance an upcoming trip to China.

On Saturday, the team will hold a barbecue/bottle drive event at Docksteader Source for Sports in South Surrey (101 2381 King George Blvd.) from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

The event will also feature raffle draws, games and prizes.

The team – which in addition to Semiahmoo Minor Hockey Association players also includes players from Burnaby, Langley and Richmond – is set to head to Beijing from Aug. 3-10 to participate in a series of exhibition games, where they'll face off against teams from throughout Asia.

In addition to the on-ice action, they'll also take in the sights, including the Great Wall and Tiananmen Square.
