Last year, Choices Markets in South Surrey raised $1,400 with its prostate cancer awareness pancake breakfast.

This year, they hope to do better.

The goal for the Saturday, Sept. 15 event is $2,000.

It will be held from 8 a.m. till noon at Choices Market Alder Crossing 3248 King George Blvd.

The money raised will go to Prostate Cancer Canada to use for awareness, research and education purposes.

The support group arm of Prostate Cancer Canada is Prostate Cancer Canada Network (PCCN).

The local support group, PCCN-Surrey, will be in attendance to answer questions about the resources that are available to anyone with a diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in Canadian men and will affect one in six men in their lifetime; within a decade that statistic is expected to rise to one in four.

Prostate Cancer Canada is the national foundation dedicated to the elimination of prostate cancer through research, education, support and awareness.

PCCN has 70 support groups across Canada and participates in monthly meetings, educational events and fundraisers.

The goal of PCCN support groups is to educate men on the importance of early detection and providing resources and experience for men with a new diagnosis of prostate cancer.
