The widow of a Ridge Meadows Mountie killed while on the job is gearing up for a ball hockey tournament in his honour.

Last year more than 1,500 turned out for the inaugural Cst. Rick O'Brien Joint Forces Jamboree. The memorial ball hockey tournament had 160 youth take part with 64 police officers, and 16 fire fighters.

O’Brien was only 51 when he was executing a search warrant at a residence in Coquitlam with several police officers in 2023. There was an exchange of gunfire and O’Brien was killed and two other officers were injured in the incident. The person they exchanged gunfire with was also injured.

His widow Nicole Longacre-O’Brien created a society – the Cst. Rick O’Brien Joint Forces Foundation – in his name, and held the inaugural tournament.

The tournament last year raised more than $85,000 for the foundation.

In addition to the ball hockey tournament, there was a First Responder Zone that included the RCMP Street Enforcement Unit, B.C. Emergency Health Services, the police drone unit, police dogs, and fire and crime prevention units.

And there was a Community Corner where community groups were able to showcase the services they provide.

Former Vancouver Canuck Kirk McLean also came out to sign autographs.

This year Nicole O'Brien is hoping even more people take part.

"Stay tuned for more details, including registration info and all the exciting surprises we have in store," she said online.

"Can’t wait to see you there."

The second annual Cst. Rick O'Brien's Joint Forces Jamboree will be taking place Saturday, May 24, at Planet Ice and the Albion Fairgrounds in Maple Ridge.
