Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation has launched the start of the autumn planting season with thousands of its signature Princess Irene tulip bulbs.

Under the theme “Royalty is coming to Surrey”, the Foundation is encouraging residents to purchase their bulbs during the annual Tulips for Tomorrow campaign, which returns for a 6th season.

“With its bright orange colouring blended with regal gold and purple flames, the Princess Irene tulip fills a spring garden with energy, stunning beauty and a delightful fragrance,” said Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation President/CEO Jane Adams. “Make your home a stop on Princess Irene’s royal tour by planting your bulbs today.”

Princess Irene tulip bulbs are available at select retail locations, with all proceeds going to the foundation.

Tulip bulb packages, at $10 each, can be found at four Surrey locations:

• 99 Nursery and Florist - 9376 King George Blvd.

• Art's Nursery - 8940 192 St.

• Cloverdale Country Farms – 5688 168 St.

• David Hunter Garden Centers - 15175 72nd Ave.

Packages are also available online at www.tulipsfortomorrow.com.

Meanwhile, those who make a donation of $100 or more to Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation by November will be given a package of tulip bulbs, ready to plant this fall. Donors of $1,000 or more will receive their very own patio planter full of blooming tulips in the spring.

Donations this fall will support Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation’s drive to provide critical care for children.

In the past 12 months:

• More than 40,000 children have been treated at SMH, about 200 of them for cancer;

• Nearly 18,000 children visited the hospital’s Emergency Room

• 500 newborns received specialized care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – of the 4,200 born each year in our Family Birthing Unit, one of the busiest obstetrical units in the country.

Several businesses have partnered with the Foundation to support Tulips for Tomorrow. For a second year, Bouygues Building Canada is the campaign’s presenting sponsor. Employees from the company recently volunteered to manually package the bulbs to prepare them for sale.

Other partners have provided the tulip bulbs, soil, planter pots, landscaping, delivery, storage, creative design and signage at no cost to the foundation.

Established in 1992, Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation has raised more than $60 million to purchase medical equipment, fund innovative programs, and support training and research.
