Organizations that track populations of various winged species are asking citizens worldwide – including in South Surrey and White Rock – to give them the bird this weekend.
The bird count, that is.
The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual initiative of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society and Bird Studies Canada.
Taking place Feb. 13-16, the backyard count invites citizens to take 15 minutes on one or more of the days to count birds they see and enter the details at www.birdcount.org
The information is used to help track changes in bird populations.
Last year, bird watchers from 135 countries participated in the count, noting nearly 4,300 species on more than 144,000 checklists.
