More than 40 athletes from White Rock and South Surrey raised $55,000 for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice during the annual Innovative Fitness Canuck Place Adventure Challenge earlier this month.

The money made up 22 per cent of the $245,000 raised during the two-day event held over the Sept. 15 weekend in Deep Cove and Cultus Lake.

The Deep Cove Adventure Challenge featured kayaking, mountain biking and hiking while the Cultus Lake Adventure Challenge held on the second day included kayaking, road biking and trail running.

Participants were encouraged to raise a minimum of $1,000 for Canuck Place which provides specialized pediatric palliative care for B.C. children living with life-threatening illnesses and support for their families.

Many doubled, tripled and even quadrupled the suggested minimum, one team raising close to $10,000.

Since the annual event began in 2006, more than 1,500 people have taken part and more than $1.5 million has been collected.
