In the space of just a few hours last weekend, the Self Advocates of Semiahmoo met their goal to raise $5,750 to support the installation of an accessibility mat on White Rock Pier.
All but $110 of the total was raised Saturday (June 22), when SAS held its annual New to You Clothing Sale.
The sale is aimed at offering affordable, quality clothing that is accessible and inclusive to everyone — from bargain-hunters to those who simply can't afford today's rising costs — while raising funds to support community initiatives. All items are priced at $3.
Last year, the sale raised $5,130.
This year's event again drew scores of eager shoppers out, with many lining up 90 minutes ahead of the sale's 10 a.m. opening.
SAS program co-ordinator Sarah Clemas said the group is happy to top up the $5,640 raised in order to meet its pier-donation pledge.
White Rock council voted June 10 in favour of having the mat installed. Advocates for people with disabilities have called for the move since February. It will help smooth the structure's uneven plank surface, which poses a safety issue for those in wheelchairs, and others facing mobility challenges, including the visually impaired.
Clemas thanked community members and politicians who turned out to support the clothing-sale effort.
"We're grateful for all the voices in our community who come together and help make our community more inclusive and accessible."
