COLUMN: Kent Street Centre could use a hand in the kitchen

Volunteers needed to help with preparation, cook, serve and bake

Kent Street Activity Centre is filled with opportunities to meet people and participate in fun activities like bingo every Tuesday, 1-3 p.m. Keep your mind active by keeping your eyes peeled for the winning numbers.

Take a short break halfway through the games to enjoy light refreshments while socializing with your fellow bingo players.

Come early and enjoy a nourishing, tasty lunch at the Kent Street Coffee Shop. New members always welcome!

Try out any Kent Street Centre activity group three times before purchasing a membership. Remember that a Recreation and Culture membership is only $20 for the remainder of the year.

• One of the highlights of ‘For the Health of It,’ a health and wellness fair on Sept. 21, is the introduction of an abilities course that provides an opportunity for participants to try a physical course that gives them feedback on how they move in a variety of ways.

Coupled with a questionnaire, the information gained can be valuable in determining what is the best starting point for seniors wanting to participate in active health and wellness programs offered in the community.

• The Kent Street Seniors Society presents a Fall Fashion Show on Saturday, Oct. 5, 1:30 p.m. at the Kent Street Centre. Fill your fall wardrobe with flair at this event hosted by Nygard Fashions. Call 604-541-2199 to register. Cost is only $8.

• Tickets are on sale now for the Kent Street Seniors Society’s Annual Bridge Tournament, Friday, Sept. 27, from 1-4 p.m. Register with a partner and enjoy an afternoon of contract bridge. Refreshments included.

Tickets are $10 and available at Kent Street Activity Centre, White Rock Community Centre and Centennial Park offices. No tickets at the door. Please call 604-541-2231 for more information.

• A wonderful program called piano playing therapy for mind and body is offered at the Kent Street Activity Centre beginning Saturday, Sept. 28, 2-3 p.m.

Learn hands-on activities on a keyboard that will help keep your brain active, boost your memory and concentration, strengthen your hand muscles and help wrist flexibility. No piano-playing experience necessary. Call 604-541-2199 to register.

• The Kent Street Coffee Shop is looking for kitchen volunteers to assist in preparation, cooking and serving. A baker is also needed every Monday. If you have some time on your hands, love to cook, bake, like meeting new people and helping others, this is definitely the opportunity for you. Call 604-541-2231 for more information or drop into the Kent Street Activity Centre and fill out a volunteer application form.

• See you tonight (Sept. 18) at the Kent Street Activity Centre for a night of social dancing to the great sounds of Music Variations. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with dancing from 7 -10 p.m. Open to all ages 50+, singles and couples, and includes refreshments at the break. A fun night out for only $6 for members and $8 for non-members.
