Delta putting out call for Snow Angels

Program matches volunteers with residents who are unable to shovel snow from sidewalks and footpaths

The City of Delta is looking for volunteers for its Snow Angels program.

The program matches volunteers with local residents who are unable to shovel snow from their sidewalks and footpaths. During times of heavy snowfall (five centimetres or more), Delta’s Snow Angels are dispatched throughout the community to help residents who need assistance.

These volunteers play a vital role in establishing a safe and secure environment for people in need, according to a City of Delta press release, and the popular program has become a mainstay initiative during Delta’s unpredictable winters.

“The Snow Angel program exemplifies our connection to our community and our commitment to each other,” Counc. Lois Jackson said in a press release. “Each of our volunteers are instrumental in providing for those who experience difficulties once the weather turns, which is truly a rewarding experience.”

Snow Angel volunteers must be at least 13 years old (13 to 16 years old with parental supervision, or with a clear police information check for volunteers 16 years old and older) and own a snow shovel. Community groups are encouraged to register together.

The Snow Angels program is available to Delta residents 65 years of age and older who have physical limitations and do not have others in their household or nearby who are able to assist. Older residents 70+ who have physical limitations will receive first priority.
