Extra Surrey shelter space opens during wind warning

The Homelessness Services Association of BC issued an alert Friday (Oct. 25) due to strong winds expected in Metro Vancouver overnight Friday. 

Extra community-based shelters are open in Surrey and White Rock this weekend due to a wind warning.  

The Homelessness Services Association of BC issued an alert Friday (Oct. 25) due to strong winds expected in Metro Vancouver overnight Friday. 

Environment Canada says the weather system will bring strong winds to Metro Vancouver, the Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island starting Friday.

"The strongest winds will begin near midnight and end by early Saturday morning with peak wind gusts of 90 km/h expected over exposed coastal locations. Metro Vancouver should see the strongest winds over areas near Boundary Bay," reads the alert

The following community-based shelters in Surrey and White Rock will be active on Friday (Oct. 25). 

  • Surrey Alliance Church: 13474 96th Avenue between 9:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. The site is accessible through the breezeway entrance in the rear parking lot. No pets. 
  • South Surrey Recreation & Arts Centre EWR: 14601 20th Avenue between 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. The site is accessible near the lower parking lot. The site is pet-friendly and pet accessible.
