Firefighters, mayor add to Variety telethon

White Rock firefighters and Mayor Wayne Baldwin will support Variety The Children's Charity Feb. 11 and 12.

White Rock firefighters will return to the Hero's Panel this weekend in support of Variety The Children's Charity.

Four uniformed members of the Local 2407 crew – along with Mayor Wayne Baldwin – will take pledges from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 12 during the 46th Annual Variety Children's Charity Show of Hearts Telethon, broadcast live on Global BC.

It will be the firefighters' second year taking part in the fundraiser, which gets underway at 7 p.m. Feb. 11 and benefits B.C. children who have special needs.

But it is not the first time their efforts have benefitted Variety.

In September 2010, the firefighters spent two weeks cycling across Canada in support of the charity, raising tens of thousands of dollars for the cause.

The Show of Hearts is Variety's biggest fundraiser, generating millions of dollars every year. Last year, the telethon raised $7,012,483.
