A fundraiser to benefit cancer research takes place tomorrow (Feb. 19) at Semiahmoo Shopping Centre in South Surrey.
Ride2Survive participant Dennis Asbury will set up on a stationary bike from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in an effort to raise donations and awareness for the cause.
Ride2Survive is a one-day, 400-kilometre bike ride from Kelowna to Delta. All proceeds – every rider commits to raising at least $1,500 – from the June 18 ride will benefit the Canadian Cancer Society.
Asbury, 47, is participating in the challenging trek for the second time.
The father of two underwent surgery to remove the upper lobe of his right lung in November 2008, after X-rays for injuries suffered in a fall picked up an anomaly that was later diagnosed as lung cancer.
Asbury's wife, Adrienne, said Saturday's effort is "a bit of an experiment" – as much, if not more, about raising awareness of the ride itself, as it is about raising money.
"Even if we don't raise a bunch of money, hopefully, we raise more awareness that there's this ride going on," she said.
