Semiahmoo Peninsula youngsters compete in robotics competition

Winners to advance to provincial competition

With the opportunity to compete in a provincial competition on the line, young inventors had to use a combination of math, coding and robotics to complete simple tasks at an event held in Semiahmoo Shopping Centre Sunday.

In the RoboSports competition, which is hosted by South Surrey’s Robokids, participants were given a few hours to build a robot that could complete a set of “missions,” including organizing a trio of foam blocks by colour, and lifting a block into a bucket.

Robots are built using the Lego Mindstorm kit, which includes gears, axles and motors. The after-school program is tailored to youth age four to 14.

Berry He and Simon Jin tied for first place Sunday, followed by Jonathan Lai, Bernie Xu and Richard Kang.

The top five winners are to represent White Rock in a provincial tournament in Richmond at the end of May.
