Surrey RCMP is accepting applications for its Citizen and Youth Police Academies

Registration opens for RCMP academies

Students, citizens can learn more about policing in Surrey

Students and citizens of Surrey are invited to register for the Surrey RCMP’s  Citizen and Youth Police Academies which will run from Sept. 14 to Nov. 2.

The academies are eight-week courses designed to give residents an inside look into policing in Surrey. The interactive learning series aims to foster a better understanding between citizens and the RCMP and explore what the community can do to enhance public safety. This year’s academies will have participants following a specific case study from beginning to end to demonstrate how different units and sections at the Surrey detachment work together to solve crime.

“Over the past few years these academies have demonstrated that our residents are eager to learn more about the different aspects of policing and what they can do to help us enhance public safety,” said Surrey RCMP Assistant Commissioner Bill Fordy. “A well-informed and engaged community is our greatest asset to achieving the shared goal of reduced crime and safe neighbourhoods.”

Youth applications are being accepted until the deadline of May 31. Citizen applications will be accepted in the month of June.

The Academies will feature presentations and demonstrations by police officers and staff on a variety of topics including:  a day in the life of a patrol officer, drugs and major crime, forensics, media relations, Police Dog Services, crime prevention, traffic investigations, and basic law.

Applicants must pass a criminal record check (no record or pending charges) and be available for all eight sessions on Wednesday evenings. Students in Grades 10-12 as of Sept. 14 can register for the Youth Academy. Residents or business owners in Surrey are eligible to register for the Citizen Academy.
