White Rock firefighter Mike Bancroft hands David Young – Sources Community Resource Centre's executive director – one of the toys collected at the firefighters' annual Breakfast with Santa event Dec. 1.

The numbers are in: White Rock firefighters fed more than 700 people and raised $4,363 for charity at their 2012 Breakfast with Santa.

It was “a really good turnout,” firefighter Evan Bird said of the 400 children and 321 adults who came through the doors.

“We actually ran out of food this year, which was a first in my time.”

The Dec. 1 event marked the Local 2407 crew’s 17th year hosting members of the public, young and old, to the Pacific Avenue hall for pancakes, sausages, coffee and more.

Another surprise was the numbers of gifts attendees brought to donate to the newest aspect of the morning, a Christmas toy drive.

Half of the cache – estimated at more than 100 toys, games and other items – was delivered to Sources Community Resource Centre Friday, and will be distributed through programs that serve vulnerable people. The other half was delivered to the Launching Pad recovery home.

Sources is to also benefit from an effort this weekend by White Rock auxiliary firefighters.

The crew will be out in force Saturday at Hillcrest Plaza and Central Plaza from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to collect donations of non-perishable food for the food bank.

The Cans 4 Kids event is hoped to generate more than 500 pounds of food for the cause. Those dropping by will have an opportunity to check out a firetruck. There’ll also be free coffee and treats.
