A trunk sale set for Saturday, June 14 in South Surrey is hoping to bolster efforts to boost literacy.

A trunk sale tomorrow in South Surrey is hoped to bolster efforts to boost literacy.

READ Surrey/White Rock Society is partnering with local author Chantal Houle at the Mount Olive Trunk Sale, set for 9 a.m. to noon June 14, at the 2350 148 St. church.

According to a news release, the family-focused trunk sale – featuring children's activities, artisans and snacks – will also include the sale of bamboo socks by the non-profit society, as well as the sale of Houle's new picture book, Where Kitty Belongs.

Houle is a volunteer literacy tutor with READ, and part-proceeds from her book sales on Saturday are to benefit the society, the release states.

The society serves Surrey and White Rock, working to raise awareness of literacy issues and help people develop the reading, writing, math, language and digital skills needed to improve their life opportunities, the release adds.

"READ’s activities include referrals to literacy programs and services, several family literacy initiatives, and the Partners one-to-one adult literacy program for people who may not have finished school and who are not ready for formal education."
